09/10/2004 Archived Entry: "Pizza and Plotting"

Pizza & Perl @ Pasquale's

What: The First Annual SF.pm Planning Meeting

RSVP: Quinn Weaver, qw at sf dot pm dot org
Date: Tuesday, September 28, 2004
Time: 8:00 p.m.
Place: Pasquale's Pizzeria, 524 Irving St.

Food: Excellent Italian fare, including some vegetarian entrees.

Parking: Pretty much catch-as-catch-can. Street parking is not too bad in this neighborhood. There's also a couple of flat-rate lots nearby.

From BART: Be prepared for a bit of a crowd, as this is the end of the prime commute time. Get off at the Embarcadero station. Within the station, exit BART, enter MUNI, and catch the N Ocean Beach (outbound). Get off at Irving St. and 7th Ave, then walk back to the restaurant.

From Caltrain: (Don't take Caltrain if you can avoid it. Trains run back at 10:00 p.m. and 11:59 p.m. only!) From the station, take the N Judah to Irving St. and 7th Ave. (Again, be prepared for a crowd;
the N can be pretty full at this time of day.)

Yes, I know, it's a radical concept: Actually plan things? for SF.pm?! Well, that's what I aim to do.

Normally I make an effort to plan events throughout the year. Volunteers step forth; suggestions pop up. I've had some excellent help in this regard. In fact, it would be more accurate to say that some people have done excellent work, and I've helped them.

However, there are dry periods: We sometimes go for months without a speaker. Also, the planning process has little input from the majority of our members.

This year, I'd like to open up the process. I'll take volunteer speakers, possible contacts for speakers, suggestions for topics, and general feedback. Then I'll contact all potential speakers and try to work ut one year's schedule. With luck, I'll be able to fill more of the year. More meetings mean more cool opics, which should equate to happy Perl Mongers.

If you can't make it to the meeting, shoot me an email. All suggestions are welcome. I'll continue to plan throughout the year; naturally, I'll leave space in case new opportunities for speakers come up.
