06/07/2007 Archived Entry: "June 26, 2007: Fred Moyer on the Big Ball of Mud"
Update: Fred has posted his slides from the talk.
NOTE, NOTE, NOTE: This meeting starts at 7:00 p.m., not our usual meeting time of 8:00. We are trying an earlier time at the request of our venue.
Fred Moyer will discuss techniques for handling the Big Ball of Mud: that haphazardly grown, ill-documented, fragile, and messy codebase that we've all had to deal with. His talk focuses on how to test and clean up BBOMs, paying off technical debt[1] so you can add features again without fear of the code breaking.
I had a chance to see this talk last month, and I was very impressed. Fred does a great job of explaining not just the technical, uh, techniques for handling BBOMs, but also the trickier social engineering you have to do in order to make it happen.
BGI will sponsor Thai food from BKK. Thanks, guys!
RSVP: Jeff.Thalhammer@barclaysglobal.com
Date: Tuesday, June 26, 2007
Time: 7:00 p.m.
Place: Barclays Global Investors, 45 Fremont St., San Francisco (between Market and Fremont). This month there is construction on Fremont Street, so please enter from Beale Street (one street closer to the Ferry Building.)
Security: When you arrive, please tell the security people the name with which you RSVP'd. They will direct you to the meeting room.
Parking: There are several outdoor lots with cheap evening rates, all of them south of Market and within a few blocks of 45 Fremont. Look on Harrison and Fremont first. After work hours, these lots usually have plenty of spaces.
From BART: Get off at the Embarcadero station. Take the Beale St. exit. Heading away from the water on Market, come to Fremont. Turn left on Fremont; 45 Fremont is the big building halfway down the block.
From Caltrain: (Don't take Caltrain if you can avoid it. Trains run back at 10:00 p.m. and 11:59 p.m. only!) From the station, take the N Judah to the Embarcadero station, then follow the directions from BART.
